Andrea Kantrowitz is the director of the Thinking through Drawing Project in the Art and Art Education Department and an interdisciplinary doctoral candidate in art and cognitive studies at Teachers College, Columbia University She is also an artist and teacher as well as one of the organizers of the International Drawing and Cognition Research symposia, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of the Arts London and Loughborough University in the U.K. She holds a B.A in Art and Cognition from Harvard University and a MFA in Painting from Yale. She has also worked for many years as a teaching artist in the New York City public schools. Her research examines the cognitive interactions underlying contemporary artists’ drawing practices. Her own art work is represented by Kenise Barnes Fine Art.

Seymour Simmons is an Associate Professor at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC, where he coordinates the undergraduate art education program and teaches art education and studio courses in foundation and figure drawing. Prior to moving to South Carolina, he was an assistant professor at Massachusetts College of Art where he also taught art education and drawing, and has previous experience teaching art at middle school, college, and adult education levels. His education includes a B.F.A. in printmaking from Colorado State University, as well as an M.Ed. and Ed.D. from Harvard University where his focus was philosophy of education. His dissertation addressed the history and philosophy of drawing instruction in art education and the education of artists. While at Harvard and for several years thereafter, he did research on arts education at Project Zero, and continues that association up to the present. During the 2011-2012 academic year, he was on sabbatical doing research on drawing and cognition as a visiting professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, and a visiting scholar at Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education. He continues as an active artist working primarily in drawing and watercolor. Among his publications:
